Cast Your Burden On The Lord
By Rich Carmicheal
If you (or others dear to you) are going through a trying time, the Herald staff hopes this issue will be of special encouragement. We believe the Lord’s heart is to work through the various messages He has provided to minister to those who are in the midst of trials. In light of who He is and what He is able to do, there is great hope, no matter how serious the situation may be.
As David, in the midst of great trouble, says in Psalm 62, “My soul, wait silently for God alone, for my expectation is from Him” (v. 5). When we turn to the Lord in times of trial, we have every reason to believe that He will help us. Why? David shares the underlying reason for such confidence: “God has spoken once, twice I have heard this: That power belongs to God. Also to You, O Lord, belongs mercy...” (vv. 11-12). In other words, we can trust God because He is full of power and full of mercy toward us. He loves us dearly and is always working according to what is best for us. And because His power is unlimited, He has the resources and strength to help us no matter how impossible our situation may seem. Therefore, David gives us this encouragement: “Trust in Him at all times, you people; pour out your heart before Him; God is a refuge for us” (v. 8).
The Lord has everything we need. And more than that, He is everything we need. As the Prophet Jeremiah writes in the midst of great affliction: “This I recall to my mind, therefore I have hope. Through the Lord’s mercies we are not consumed, because His compassions fail not. They are new every morning; great is Your faithfulness. ‘The Lord is my portion,’ says my soul, ‘Therefore I hope in Him!’ The Lord is good to those who wait for Him, to the soul who seeks Him” (Lam. 3:21-25). The Lord is indeed the God of peace, comfort, compassion, encouragement, hope, joy, provision, protection, forgiveness, deliverance, salvation, healing, strength, wisdom, grace and life. “He only is my rock and my salvation; He is my defense; I shall not be moved. In God is my salvation and my glory; the rock of my strength, and my refuge, is in God” (Psa. 62:6-7).
“Cast your burden on the Lord, and He shall sustain you…” (Psa. 55:22).
