Prayer Is The Work Of God Done At The Throne

By Lois J. Stucky

The above title sentence suddenly came to mind recently. I do not recall from whose pen words to that effect came, but that is a key thought to consider as one enters a time of prayer.

"At the throne." A few moments of contemplating the awesome words, at the throne, would be intimidating were it not that seated with the high and lofty God on the throne is His beloved Son, our great High Priest, who offered His Blood as our right of access to the most holy throne of God. "For we have not a high priest which cannot be touched with the feeling of our infirmities; but was in all points tempted like as we are, yet without sin. Let us therefore come boldly unto the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy, and find grace to help in time of need" (Heb. 4:15-16).

Think of the kind, warm welcome of Matthew 7:7-11 at the throne: "Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you: for every one that asketh receiveth; and he that seeketh findeth; and to him that knocketh it shall be opened.... If ye…know how to give good gifts unto your children, how much more shall your Father which is in heaven give good things to them that ask Him?" Surely praise, thanksgiving, adoration and worship are fitting "protocol" as the blood-washed and humble heart approaches the throne of our gracious God.

"Prayer is the work...." The article, "Urgent Prayer For Revival," on pages 5 and 6 of this issue, convinces us that there is much urgent work to be done at the throne, and it requires diligence, effort and persistence, in other words, hard work, and the flesh is loath to give that. But, friends, such prayer from pure, faith-filled souls will surely prevail with Him who is eager to answer. His eagerness is disclosed in the "how much more" measure of Matthew 7:11 quoted above. That is infinitely more than the human can even ask or imagine! Again, how fitting is praise, thanksgiving, adoration and worship!

And what a sense it gives of our need of the mighty help of the Holy Spirit to do the work of God at the throne in a worthy way. We are partnering in a most vital, eternal and heavenly work, for the Apostle Paul tells us that we are "fellow laborers with God" (1 Cor. 3:9) or "God’s fellow workers." The redeemed people of God have a high and holy calling!

Are you one who will join in asking God for a greater and nobler spirit of prayer in these critical days? Personal and local and national needs are intensifying and easily dominate our prayer time. But what immeasurable blessing would come to untold millions if we Christians would unite and expand our heart cries to encircle the globe with pleas for worldwide revival!
