Power From On High
By Leonard Ravenhill
"Power belongeth unto God" (Psa. 62:11). "Ye shall receive power, after…." (Acts 1:8).
In the valedictory service of Acts chapter one, our Lord holds before His disciples the promise of power. The word is "dunamis" – ability (Young).
We have gravely pauperized this text. We have held it before convicted audiences as a cure for bad temper, jealousies, malice, etc. It means that, but infinitely more: "Behold, I give…you power…over all the power of the enemy: and nothing shall by any means hurt you" (Luke 10:19).
If the children of God had sought this power as the children of the world have sought the power of wealth, or political power, hell would be poorer and heaven richer. Power from on high is God’s answer to the spiritual paralysis of this hour! The redemptive, resurrection, risen power of the Savior guarantees us power over all internal weakness, and over all external potentialities.
The greatest waste of all time is that of the Church trying to do in the flesh what can only be done in the Spirit. We neglect to avail ourselves of the vast, measureless power of God through the operation of the Holy Spirit upon us, and then through us. In a world of expanding, material power, shall we sit at ease in Zion with shrinking, spiritual power? God forbid!
