Nearly forty years ago, Billy Graham wrote a book entitled, World Aflame. In an introductory paragraph he wrote: "Our world is on fire, and man without God will never be able to control the flames. The demons of hell have been let loose. The fires of passion, greed, hate, and lust are sweeping the world…."
Daily conditions around the world convince us beyond doubt that not only is man without God unable to control the flames, but that the fires are burning more savagely today than ever before. Oh, how desperately the world needs God’s intervention! Only when God takes full control will righteousness and peace reign. No one has the final answers but God.
"O Lord God of our fathers, art not Thou God in heaven? And rulest not Thou over all the kingdoms of the heathen? And in thine hand is there not power and might, so that none is able to withstand Thee?" (2 Chr. 20:6). "The Lord is King for ever and ever…" (Psa. 10:16). "Now to the King eternal, immortal, invisible, to God who alone is wise, be honor and glory forever and ever. Amen" (1 Tim. 1:17).
The Christian does not despair, though sin and iniquity abound. God has not left the world to chaos. He has a master plan toward which He is working, for this age and the age to come. Nations rise and fall, but God remains! His ultimate triumph is sure. We Christians see ourselves as His servants, seeking to live "righteously, and godly, in this present world; looking for that blessed hope, and the glorious appearing of the great God and our Saviour Jesus Christ; who gave Himself for us, that He might redeem us from all iniquity, and purify unto Himself a peculiar [special] people, zealous of good works" (Titus 2:12).
"Zealous of good works." Every Christian is called to good works. And is not prayer a good work? Friends, prayer is the good work we would urge you to today. Though we do not fully understand why, God has ordained prayer as the way of getting His will accomplished and His work done on earth. His many promises invite us and urge us to pray, to ask, to seek, to knock. Who knows what eternal good God will yet do in this flaming world, if we pray in faith to Him?
Pray that God will counter the diabolical fires blazing today in the world, with the pure flames of the enlightening, invigorating, life-giving Holy Spirit sent down from Heaven in great outpourings from Heaven! And on our part, let us as Christians "stir up the Gift of God" within us as Havner exhorts.
In this issue of Herald of His Coming we are giving special attention to leaders, spiritual leaders in particular. Honored indeed are those whom God calls to be spiritual leaders. What responsibilities fall to them as under-shepherds of the great and good Shepherd whose flock they lead – the flock whom He redeemed with His own life blood, the flock which He cherishes as His beloved Bride. The eternal destiny of souls is greatly influenced by the integrity and faithfulness and spiritual power of the leaders. Whole churches may rise or fall, depending on the caliber of their spiritual leaders. What solemn accountability spiritual leaders have! How much they need our prayers!
And likewise, leaders of nations have great accountability, for rulers are ordained of God. He tells us in His Word: "Let every soul be subject unto the higher powers. For there is no power but of God: the powers that be are ordained of God…Rulers are not a terror to good works, but to the evil. Do that which is good, and thou shalt have praise of the same: for he is the minister of God to thee for good…he is a minister of God, a revenger to execute wrath upon him that doeth evil" (Rom. 13:1).
