Jesus Warns And Entreats!
"Be you therefore ready...."!
"The Son of man cometh at an hour that you think not" (Luke 12:40). Jesus is coming in an unexpected hour when some will not be ready.
"Take heed to yourselves...."!
"Lest at any time your hearts be overcharged with surfeiting...and the cares of this life" (Luke 21:34). Christ's solemn warning to "take heed" cannot be ignored. "Overcharged with surfeiting" refers to excess in frivolities of this life. Men are slaves to things which are not good for soul and body. "Overcharged with cares" means so burdened with cares and anxieties of the home and business that we neglect prayer and worship.
"Watch and pray...."!
"Lest coming suddenly He find you sleeping" (Mark 13:33-36). This warning is not to the unsaved who are dead in sins, but to sleepy Christians. Spiritual sleepiness and stupor are quite common among saved people. Such will not be ready.
"Watch you therefore and pray always...."!
"That you may be accounted worthy to escape all these things that shall come to pass, and to stand before the Son of man....!" (Luke 21:36). We must prove ourselves worthy. Many are careless Christians who have not taken heed to the repeated entreaties of Jesus but have been lulled to sleep.
Jesus stressed the need of preparing for His Coming. If every saved person will be ready, then His emphasis on preparation would not have been necessary. His warnings and exhortations were addressed to His redeemed people. Salvation is free; it is a gift. But thereafter we must be obedient to His repeated entreaties and warnings!
