Be In Earnest
By Sarah Foulkes Moore
“I sought for a man among them, that should make up the hedge, and stand in the gap before Me for the land, that I should not destroy it: but I found none” (Ezek. 22:30).
“Nations do not fall as long as they are hedged in by praying men and women. But when there are gaps in the hedge – lawlessness, anarchy, corruption and despotism slip in and do their destructive work. Our beloved nation was born in prayer. It was defended, enlarged and developed by praying men. Like Israel, it became great – a power among the nations of the world. It grew rich, self-satisfied, in need of nothing. Then it was that the hedge of living prayer-warriors began to decay, leaving gaps for evil forces to enter in.”
“Today America is overrun by evil, and is fast rushing toward the precipice of destruction. Is there no man, no woman, to stand in the gap before God and intercede for the nation, for the souls of men?”
The responsibility of changing things is yours and mine. But most Christians today are profoundly unaroused. They know no urgency, no desperation in prayer. When we receive the light of Salvation, God means for us to be light-bearers to all that our zeal, prayers and strength can reach.
Whitefield prayed the Lord to make him an extraordinary Christian. Today you and I need to pray such a prayer for ourselves, and with extraordinary heart searching and confession, get out of the way the things that stand between us and the Lord and between each other. Let us seek the Lord with all our heart for His intervening mercies!
