Cleaving To The King

By Frances Ridley Havergal

“The men of Judah clave unto their king” (2 Sam. 20:2). Let this stir us from our too-easy resting into active cleaving, quickening our following afar off into following hard after Him. “Thine are we…and on Thy side!” (1 Chr. 12:18).

Cleaving to our Lord is not a mere terrified clinging for safety. It is the bright, brave resolution, strengthened, not weakened, by the sight of wavering ones, to be on His side come what may – because He is our King, because we love Him, because His cause and His kingdom are so very dear to us.

We cannot thus cleave without loosening from other interests. But what matter? Let us be noble for God. God would have us entirely “with Him” (Song 4:8). It is, after all, the easiest and safest course.
