Seek First

By W. C. Moore

"Seek first the kingdom of God, and His righteousness" (Matt. 6:33). "It is time to seek the Lord, till He come and rain righteousness upon you" (Hos. 10:12). Compute the relative value of the things of time and the things of eternity – and the significance of these two Scriptures bursts upon you.

And Jesus says, "If a man love Me, he will keep My words" (John 14:23). No use side-stepping the issue – if we do not obey the Lord we do not love Him, Jesus Himself being the authority for this statement. "If any man love not the Lord Jesus Christ, let him be Anathema" (1 Cor. 16:22).

Many will be surprised in the day of judgment, saying, "Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in Thy name?" but the Lord will say He never knew them (Matt. 7:21-23). Strive to enter in, for many will seek to enter in, and shall not be able (Luke 13:23-30).

Be not deceived; God is not mocked: what you sow, you reap (Gal. 6:7). Live for pleasure now, and like the rich man, you, too, will lift up your eyes in hell, being in torments. All we do should be done with the pure motive to glorify God (1 Cor. 10:31). "She that liveth in pleasure is dead while she liveth" (1 Tim. 5:6). "How much she hath glorified herself, and lived deliciously, so much torment and sorrow give her" (Rev. 18:7).

Forsake all you have, or you cannot be a disciple of Christ (Luke 14:33). It is only your reasonable service that you present your body a living sacrifice to God (Rom. 12:1). Do justly, love mercy, walk humbly with thy God (Mic. 6:8). Be not deceived: neither fornicators, nor idolaters…nor covetous…shall inherit the kingdom of God (1 Cor. 6:9-10). "Whosoever looketh on a woman to lust after her hath committed adultery with her already in his heart…If thy right eye offend thee, pluck it out, and cast it from thee" (Matt. 5:28-29).

Is some friend, some associate causing you to stumble? Better take Christ and let that friend go. Cut off that right hand and cast it from thee. "What shall it profit a man, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul?" (Mark 8:36). Dearest ties must not be permitted to come between us and God. "He that loveth father or mother more than Me is not worthy of Me" (Matt. 10:37).

Don’t figure out how you can be most comfortable – how you can get along in the best way, but deny yourself – figure out how you can advance the cause of Christ – how you can get others to be like Jesus, and to be ready for His appearing! (Matt. 16:24). Take up your cross – that thing that "crosses" your own natural desires, in order that you may gladly follow Jesus.

Act always as you will wish you had acted when you stand before the judgment seat of Christ (Rom. 14:10-12). Be ready: "for in such an hour as ye think not the Son of man cometh" (Matt. 24:44). "And what I say unto you I say unto all, Watch(Mark 13:37). "Take heed to yourselves" (Luke 21:34). "The coming of the Lord draweth nigh" (Jas. 5:8).

It is going to seem terribly sudden when some careless "professing" Christians wake up in eternity – unprepared! Might God help us! "Give diligence to make your calling and election sure" (2 Pet. 1:10). "Unto Him that is able to keep you from falling…to the only wise God…be glory" (Jude 24-25). Judas Iscariot sought first his own interests, and listen to what Jesus says – and remember that when the Son of God pronounces WOE upon anyone it is a terrible thing! "Woe to that man by whom the Son of man is betrayed! Good were it for that man if he had never been born" (Mark 14:21).

Are you, now, betraying, misrepresenting the Son of God? If you got married in order that you might be happy – you perhaps already are suffering the consequences in part. If you selected a job – made a decision, with your own convenience, your own comfort, your own advantage primarily in mind – probably already you taste the "bitter" of it in a measure.

"Seek ye FIRST the kingdom of God, and His righteousness." The Son of God did not speak those tremendous words uselessly! Aside from our duty to God, our love and devotion to Him, for our own good we ought to seek first the advancement of God’s work on earth. Lot pitched his tent toward Sodom – and look at the results. Set your affections on things above, not on things on the earth (Col. 3:2). "Be ye DOERS of the Word, and not hearers only, DECEIVING your own selves" (Jas. 1:22). "They hear Thy words, but they do them not" (Ezek. 33:32).

As Little Children

"Verily I say unto you, Except ye be converted, and become as little children, ye shall not enter into the kingdom of heaven" (Matt. 18:3). At the Adullam Mission in China, some years ago some little beggar children were taken in and taught the Gospel. They began seeking the Lord, and a mighty revival broke out. One great secret of their success, one tremendous advantage they had over the Christian people of the United States was this: each of the little children sought God for his own heart’s needs. And, as God answered their cries, and the Holy Spirit was outpoured, the Holy Spirit Himself convicted others of their sins, and they, too, began to seek the Lord. It was indeed a mighty revival from heaven!

Judge Ourselves

"IF we would judge OURSELVES, we should not be judged" (1 Cor. 11:31). The trouble is, in the United States, we judge everybody EXCEPT ourselves! No wonder the Spirit of the Lord is grieved and we have not the revival God wants to give us.

"Unto whomsoever much is given, of him shall be much required" (Luke 12:48). With all the Gospel light we have here in the United States, we are spending our time criticizing others, judging others, condemning others – while our own souls starve. "Judge not" (Matt. 7:1). "Condemn not…forgive, and ye shall be forgiven" (Luke 6:37). "Love as brethren, be pitiful, be courteous" (1 Pet. 3:8).

Oh, let us repent, dear friends, and seek the Lord till He come and rain righteousness upon us! "Woe to them that are at ease in Zion" (Amos 6:1). "So then because thou art lukewarm, and neither cold nor hot, I will spew thee out of My mouth" (Rev. 3:16).

"It is time to seek the Lord, till He come and rain righteousness upon you" (Hos. 10:12).
