A Faithful Servant Now Home With The Lord

The Herald staff has received word that Brother D. M. Vijaya Raj, longtime editor of the Malayalam Herald in India, went home to be with the Lord on January 23rd.  Please join us in praying for the Lord’s comfort to be poured out upon his family and all others who are grieving his loss.  Please also join us in offering thanks to the Lord for the life and ministry of this precious brother, including his ministry to others through the Malayalam Herald.  We consider it a great blessing upon the Herald ministry that Brother Vijaya Raj faithfully served as the editor of Aagamana Dhoodhan, the Malayalam Herald, from 1984 until the end of 2015.

In August of 2015, he sent us the following email to inform us of his need to hand the work to another:  “I am very glad to be the editor and publisher of Aagamana Dhoodhan the magazine which God granted me to carry out His services sincerely.  Henceforth, I am unable to retain as I am weak in body.  Therefore I kindly request you choose someone who is capable for the bright future of the magazine.  I wish to hand over the position to Mrs. Bindhu who was with me for the last 20 years with whole support in the work of publishing Aagamana Dhoodhan.”  We were very glad to follow his recommendation, and we are thankful that Mrs. Bindhu is carrying on this work.  Please remember her in prayer during this time as well.

In 2002, Brother Vijaya Raj sent a letter to the U.S. Herald office to give a brief account of his involvement with the Herald ministry to those of us who were fairly new to the work.  The following excerpts from that letter give a glimpse into his heart for the ministry:

“I assumed charge of editor of Malayalam Herald in 1984 when I was in Government Service.  I had busy schedules then with regard to official matters and Christian ministry.  I expressed my inability when asked, to Dr. Spurgeon to take up and carry out this great work along with my secular job and the ministry.  Dr. Spurgeon and I were in close association with each other and he was then, a source of inspiration and encouragement to my spiritual growth and ministry.  As such, when compelled, I could not say ‘no’ to him.  Thus I accepted the offer.

“But when I started the work, I became very much interested in it, spiritually nourished, edified and equipped for a more fruitful service to the Lord.  I got much inspiration from the articles of the great men of God….  Really the translation work has revolutionized my spiritual life and enlarged my vision and boundaries of my ministry.  I praise and thank God for this great ministry.  I pray that God may uphold this ministry without losing its ultimate aim.  Needless to say, there are discouraging factors too.

“As soon as I took up this great work, I wrote about it to my brother who was in Bangalore.  He was in Central Government Service and pastoring an Assembly of God church.  I would like to quote a bit from his letter.  ‘I am very glad that you have taken up the Malayalam Herald Ministry.  You will be greatly blessed through it if you will carry it out sacrificially with much prayer and dedication.  You know, W.C. Moore and his wife Sarah Foulkes Moore (Founders) carried out this work with much prayer dedication and much sacrifice.  Because they carried out this ministry on their knees, the ministry spread like wild fire in different parts of the world and thousands are being blessed and edified through it.  I, therefore, advise you to ask the Lord to give you needed grace, wisdom and knowledge to translate the articles without losing the essence and spirit of the matter.  Do not take it easy.  May God enable you and bless you.’

“My brother passed away; but his admonition and advice are still cherished in my heart.

“…Once again I praise and thank God for the great vision He gave to the Moores, who started this great venture and for their successors, who are sacrificially involved in winning the lost and perishing souls around the globe.  This magazine is in great demand.”

How thankful we are that Brother Vijaya Raj took his brother’s words to heart, and served the Herald ministry faithfully for over 30 years!  To God be the glory for all of the lives impacted through the life and ministry of this dear man of God!
