“Whosoever drinketh of the water that I shall give him shall never thirst; but the water that I shall give him shall be in him a well of water springing up into everlasting life” (John 4:14).
God graciously gives to the thirsty, drinking soul not only to quench his or her thirst but that there be overflow and outflow to others (John 7:38-39). We may feel much limited in our opportunity for outflow as far as ability, resources and circumstances are concerned, but one outflow open to us all is through prayer. And friends, our world today stands in inexpressible need of this anointed overflow of Spirit-endued prayer! Satan vigorously opposes effectual, Spirit-inspired, Spirit-empowered prayer, yet in this critical, late-in-the-day hour we cannot overstate the urgent need for just this kind of prayer. Sadly, some of us must confess that in the flesh we too often offer only easy and effortless prayer instead of the earnest, serious prayer that “avails much”; feeble prayer in place of fervent, faith-filled prayer (Jas. 5:16).
But all of us can take encouragement from this truth from God’s Word: “The Spirit…helpeth our infirmities: for we know not what we should pray for as we ought: but the Spirit [Himself] maketh intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered. And He that searcheth the hearts knoweth what is the mind of the Spirit, because He maketh intercession for the saints according to the will of God” (Rom. 8:26-27). Yes, God promises us the help we need in our praying. It is good to claim this help for each time of prayer before we begin. And we read in Ephesians 5:18, “…be filled with the Spirit.” This is to be a constant in our Christian lives, but at no time is it more vital than when we pray. Ever seek the control of the Holy Spirit in your praying.
Furthermore, we do well to clothe ourselves in the armor of God for this is prayer warfare in which we are to engage (see Ephesians 6:10-18). The vicious foe, Satan is serious about preventing us from interfering with his domain. In First John 5:19 we are told that the whole world “lies under the sway of the wicked one.” But let us take heart as we realize we are working together with Almighty God as we pray for others.
A Spirit of Intercession
Pray for God to send a spirit of intercession upon the church as a whole. Pray that a holy fire will be ignited in all of our hearts so that we will remain faithful in prayer and become more forceful in prayer. Prayers of generations past have propelled the Gospel of Christ around the world! But the task is not complete. Billions of souls remain locked in spiritual darkness. The last great harvest waits to be gathered in before our Lord returns. How much may depend on our prayers? Are there things of lesser importance we must drop in order to give ourselves more fully to flowing out to the ends of the earth through prayer?
There must be those gathered around God’s throne “out of every kindred, and tongue, and people, and nation” (Rev. 5:9). What a noble calling and task it is to have even a minute part in something so exalted and enduring.
