“Great Is Thy Faithfulness”
By Rich Carmicheal
One of the central characteristics of the Lord’s nature is faithfulness. He is always and absolutely loyal, reliable, dependable and trustworthy. Faithfulness is integral to who He is and to all He does. Even “if we are faithless, He remains faithful; He cannot deny Himself” (2 Tim. 2:13). As A. W. Tozer writes, “God, being who He is, cannot cease to be what He is, and being what He is, He cannot act out of character with Himself. He is at once faithful and immutable, so all His words and acts must be and must remain faithful.”
The Bible teaches us that God’s faithfulness surrounds Him (Psa. 89:8), and that all His works and words are faithful (Rev. 21:5). His faithfulness “reaches to the clouds” (Psa. 36:5), is established in the heavens (Psa. 89:2), and extends throughout all generations (Psa. 119:90). His faithfulness is also expressed in the descriptions of Jesus as “a merciful and faithful High Priest” (Heb. 2:17), “the Amen, the Faithful and True Witness” (Rev. 3:14), and the One who is “called Faithful and True” (Rev. 19:11). Faithfulness is “the belt of His waist” (Isa. 11:5), and He is faithful as a Son over God’s house (Heb. 3:6).
You Can Trust Him!
Because the Lord is faithful, you can trust Him completely to be loyal to you and true to all of His promises as you look to Him. This is especially reassuring in this day when pressures are increasing and we realize all the more how much we are dependent upon the Lord and His resources for life and ministry. Here are just a few examples of what He does for us in His faithfulness:
He helps us overcome temptation: “…But God is faithful, who will not allow you to be tempted beyond what you are able, but with the temptation will also make the way of escape, that you may be able to bear it” (1 Cor. 10:13). “Therefore, in all things He had to be made like His brethren, that He might be a merciful and faithful High Priest in things pertaining to God, to make propitiation for the sins of the people. For in that He Himself has suffered, being tempted, He is able to aid those who are tempted” (Heb. 2:17-18).
He forgives our sin: “If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness” (1 John 1:9).
He sanctifies us: “Now may the God of peace Himself sanctify you completely; and may your whole spirit, soul, and body be preserved blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. He who calls you is faithful, who also will do it” (1 Thes. 5:23-24).
He makes the impossible possible: “By faith Sarah herself also received strength to conceive seed, and she bore a child when she was past the age, because she judged Him faithful who had promised” (Heb. 11:11).
He protects us: “He shall cover you with His feathers, and under His wings you shall take refuge; His truth [or faithfulness] shall be your shield and buckler” (Psa. 91:4).
He strengthens us and helps us persevere: “But the Lord is faithful, who will establish you and guard you from the evil one. …Now may the Lord direct your hearts into the love of God and into the patience of Christ” (2 Thes. 3:3, 5).
He answers our prayers: “Hear my prayer, O Lord, give ear to my supplications! In Your faithfulness answer me…” (Psa. 143:1).
He helps us in the midst of suffering and persecution: “Beloved, do not think it strange concerning the fiery trial which is to try you, as though some strange thing happened to you; but rejoice to the extent that you partake of Christ’s sufferings, that when His glory is revealed, you may also be glad with exceeding joy. If you are reproached for the name of Christ, blessed are you, for the Spirit of glory and of God rests upon you. …Therefore let those who suffer according to the will of God commit their souls to Him in doing good, as to a faithful Creator” (1 Pet. 4:12-14, 19).
He gives us hope, even in the midst of great despair: “Remember my affliction and roaming, the wormwood and the gall. My soul still remembers and sinks within me. This I recall to my mind, therefore I have hope. Through the Lord’s mercies we are not consumed, because His compassions fail not. They are new every morning; great is Your faithfulness. ‘The Lord is my portion,’ says my soul, ‘therefore I hope in Him!’ The Lord is good to those who wait for Him, to the soul who seeks Him” (Lam. 3:19-25). “Let us hold fast the confession of our hope without wavering, for He who promised is faithful” (Heb. 10:23).
How encouraging it is to know that God will be faithful to us as we put our faith and confidence in Him! His nature is unchanging, His promises are true, His love is beyond measuring, His power is almighty, His peace is beyond comprehension, and His resources are limitless. You can trust fully in His faithfulness!
“Trust in the Lord, and do good; dwell in the land, and feed on His faithfulness. Delight yourself also in the Lord, and He shall give you the desires of your heart. Commit your way to the Lord, trust also in Him, and He shall bring it to pass. He shall bring forth your righteousness as the light...” (Psa. 37:3-6).
