On Being Watchful

By Lois J. Stucky (1928 - 2014)

The Scriptures exhort us to “Watch!”  Some translations read:  “Wake up!” or “Keep awake!”  “Rouse yourselves!”  “Be alert!”  This is especially important as we see indications that we are near the time of Christ’s return.  Three of the Gospels record Jesus’ admonition to “Watch!” that we be always ready, for we do not know the hour of His returning (Matt. 24:42; 25:13; Mark 13:33; 13:35; Luke 21:36).

It is important to be watchful also because our vicious enemy Satan is very active in this hour when he knows his time is short.  If we are going to be a watchman for our families, our church and/or our nation, each of us needs to be watchful first of all of his or her own individual life.

The Bible sometimes couples watch with pray.  A favorite time in which Satan would distract us is when there is an opportunity to pray.  How subtly he (or the weakness of our flesh) causes us to linger over the newspaper or the TV or the internet or some diversion, when the Spirit of God is gently calling to prayer.  How watchful we must be of our priorities!  Victory comes in getting the Holy Spirit’s help in practicing self-control.
